KEEPING COLLEGE AFFORDABLE & THE AMERICAN DREAM ALIVE
Unless Congress acts before July 1, interest rates on need-based student loans will double. Rep. Becerra has been fighting to keep student loan interest rates low. Here’s a snapshot on student loans:
  • Over 7 million students will see their interest rates double to 6.8%. This includes more than 570,000 students in California alone.

  • These students will face an average of $1,000 in extra debt each.

  • At a time of historic low interest rates, borrowers will have to pay as much as $5,000 more in higher interest costs for a college degree if Congress doesn’t act.

  • Two-thirds of the Class of 2010 graduated with student loan debt and left school with an average of $25,000 in student loan debt.

  • Outstanding student debt is already over $1 trillion and currently exceeds total credit card debt.

REP. BECERRA VOTES AGAINST BUDGET PLAN THAT PICKS MILLIONAIRES OVER MIDDLE CLASS
In April, the Republican majority in the House of Representatives voted to pass legislation (H.R. 5652) that protects tax breaks for millionaires by cutting Medicare for seniors, health care for kids, food and nutrition assistance for struggling families, and vital federal services for working Americans. Rep. Becerra voted against the legislation and released the following statement:
“As a country, our best days have come when we have pulled together to forge through whatever the crisis. On those ‘all-hands-on-deck’ moments, Americans of all stripes have always stepped up when called to duty. As a country, we continue to recover from the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, which was in large part caused by years of selfish deregulation and lax oversight of unscrupulous Wall Street banks—not by senior citizens who rely on the Meals on Wheels service or working families who can barely afford to put food on their table. Yet today, it's the most vulnerable who Republicans have targeted to pay the price for the failed policies of the past…”
REP. BECERRA SUPPORTS PROTECTIONS FOR IMMIGRANT, LESBIAN, GAY BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER (LGBT), AND NATIVE AMERICAN VICTIMS OF DOMESTICE VIOLENCE
On May 16, the House of Representatives voted to pass legislation (H.R. 4970) that fails to include certain protections for immigrant, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and Native American victims of domestic violence. Before voting against the legislation, Rep. Becerra delivered the following remarks on the floor of the House:
