REP. BECERRA VOTES TO KEEP 319,000 AMERICANS EMPLOYEDWASHINGTON, D.C.—Today the House of Representatives approved the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act (H.R. 1586), a fully paid-for bill to reduce the deficit and keep 319,000 teachers, nurses, firefighters and police officers on the job. Representative Xavier Becerra (CA-31), Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after the vote: “Working Americans took a body blow after the financial crisis on Wall Street created the worst job market in generations. In another move to help pick the middle class up off the canvass, Congress has ensured that more than 319,000 teachers, police officers, firefighters and nurses won’t join the ranks of the unemployed,” said Rep. Becerra. “The Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act keeps our teachers in the classroom and cops on the beat, and just as importantly, it will keep our economy on the road to recovery. America’s middle class deserves a fighting chance during these tough economic times.” |
