WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) began accepting requests for consideration of deferred action. On June 15th President Obama announced a change in immigration policy that would provide relief from deportation for young people who meet certain requirements. Deferred action is a temporary measure and does not change the person’s existing immigration status, but someone granted this relief is eligible for work authorization and will not be deported. Representative Xavier Becerra (CA-31), Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and Member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, released the following statement on the first official day of the application process:

“This is a new day for the Dreamers all across America. Through President Obama’s leadership, our youth now have the opportunity to put their talents and education to work for the country they know and call home.

Today, as USCIS begins accepting requests for deferred action, eligible youth must take every precaution throughout the application process to do it right. Young people should first know the facts to determine their eligibility and where necessary, seek assistance from trusted community and legal organizations to avoid fraudulent and dishonest service providers. Let us help our youth walk with ease through this process of achieving their dreams but also take up the work in Congress to fix our broken immigration system at last.”

REP. BECERRA: UN NUEVO DIA PARA LOS DREAMERS

WASHINGTON, DC - Hoy, el Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de los Estados Unidos (USCIS, por sus siglas en ingles) comenzó a aceptar solicitudes para la acción diferida. El pasado 15 de junio el Presidente Obama anunció un cambio en la política de inmigración que proporciona alivio de la deportación a los jóvenes que cumplen con ciertos requisitos. La acción diferida es una medida temporal y no cambia el estatus migratorio actual de la persona, pero alguien que recibe esta ayuda es elegible para la autorización de empleo y no será deportado. El Representante Xavier Becerra (CA-31), Vicepresidente del Caucus Demócrata de la Cámara de Representantes y miembro del Caucus Hispano del Congreso, emitió la siguiente declaración en el primer día oficial del proceso de solicitud:

"Este es un nuevo día para los Dreamers en todo Estados Unidos. Por medio del liderazgo del Presidente Obama, nuestros jóvenes ahora tienen la oportunidad de usar sus talentos y educación para beneficiar  el país que conocen y al que llaman hogar.

Hoy, al empezar el USCIS a aceptar las solicitudes de acción diferida, los jóvenes elegibles deben tomar todas las precauciones a lo largo del proceso de solicitud para hacerlo bien. Los jóvenes primero deben conocer la información básica para determinar su elegibilidad y, cuando sea necesario, solicitar la ayuda de las organizaciones comunitarias y legales que son de confianza para evitar aquellos que proveen servicios fraudulentos y deshonestos. Hay que ayudar a nuestros jóvenes llevar a cabo con facilidad este proceso de lograr sus sueños, pero también trabajar en el Congreso para finalmente reparar nuestro sistema migratorio disfuncional."
