WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today Representative Xavier Becerra, (CA-31), Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and senior member of the Ways and Means Committee, and the Budget Committee voted in favor of passing H. Con. Res 85, the Concurrent Resolution Budget for Fiscal Year 2010.
“Today the House of Representatives passed a budget that represents a long term economic plan that makes the investments needed to grow our economy and create jobs. This budget also begins to reverse the legacy of eight years of mismanagement, deficits and debt. This blueprint for economic recovery embodies President Obama’s priorities, has broad support from American families and helps put our economy back on the path of growth.
“For the first time in years, we also have an honest budget that accurately includes the costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that the previous administration left out in order to make the deficit look smaller. The budget alternative proposed by Republicans offered nothing but the same failed policies of the last eight years – the same policies that created this economic crisis. By passing this budget today, Congress will once again turn our nation toward the future and toward a new prosperity.”
The House-passed long term economic plan will cut the deficit nearly two-thirds by 2013. It cuts taxes for middle class families by $1.5 trillion. It will create jobs and grow our economy with targeted investments and reforms in health care, clean energy and education. To restore accountability and responsibility to Washington, this budget emphasizes rooting out waste, fraud and abuse in government spending. The bill passed the House by a vote of 233 to 196.
