rep. becerra ON THE altercation IN MACARTHUR PARK

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After learning of the altercation between police and demonstrators in MacArthur Park last night, Representative Xavier Becerra (CA-31) issued the following statement:

"What happened last night was difficult to watch and extraordinarily troubling. Until last night, every single rally and march for comprehensive immigration reform that has taken place over the last year has been conducted peacefully and responsibly. I have been in touch with the LAPD. I have been assured that a thorough investigation of the incident will be conducted.

"To the thousands of marchers who acted responsibly, to the Los Angeles police officers and participants who were injured, and to all Americans who believe the cause of fair and responsible immigration reform is too important to be derailed by inexcusable altercations, know that we will demand a thorough accounting by all parties and remain firm in our commitment to encouraging and ensuring the right to free speech and responsible civic engagement.”
