WASHINGTON, D.C. – Assistant to the Speaker of the House, Representative Xavier Becerra (CA-31), the only congressional member from Southern California on the House Committee on Ways and Means, and a member of the Committee on the Budget, issued the following statement in response to today’s Budget Committee markup of the House Budget Resolution:
“The House budget is the people’s budget. It makes responsible choices while also focusing on the right priorities. Critical programs that affect countless Americans have faced years of neglect by the current administration and the former Congress.
“The budget resolution that we introduced today in committee comes into balance by 2012, posts an overall smaller deficit than the president’s budget to the tune of $234 billion, and provides a paid-for long-term alternative minimum tax fix that protects the countless millions who will soon become affected by it.”
“It is a new day and we have before us a new direction. Our fiscal problems cannot and will not be fixed overnight. But rest assured that this Congress will work to pass a budget that is all-inclusive, taking care of every American, not just a privileged few.”
