NEXT STOP FOR REP. BECERRA’S MUSEUM LEGISLATION:

THE FLOOR OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. 2134 IS REPORTED FAVORABLY BY THE COMMITTEE ON RESOURCES

WASHINGTON, D.C. – H.R. 2134, the Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of the American Latino Community Act, was unanimously voted out of the Committee on Resources today during the committee’s markup. Today’s committee action all but ensures future passage by the House of Representatives.

Rep. Xavier Becerra (CA-31), the author of the legislation, was both thankful and excited about the positive momentum generated by this development.

“Today’s committee action is most certainly welcome news,” Rep. Becerra said. “It is my hope and belief that we will see the president sign this bill into law before the end of the 109th Congress. I am especially grateful to Chairman Richard Pombo, Ranking Member Nick Rahall, Subcommittee on National Parks Chairman Steve Pearce and Ranking Member Donna Christensen for all the work they did to shepherd this important legislation through their committee.”

When signed into law, the “Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of the American Latino Community Act” will set up a 23 member commission charged with producing a national conference to bring stakeholders, experts, policymakers and other interested parties together to discuss the museum’s viability; a fundraising plan to create an extensive public-private partnership; and a report to congress detailing a recommended plan of action on how to move forward with taking the museum from concept to reality. All this will occur within 18 months of the bill’s passage.
