Los Angeles. – Representative Xavier Becerra (CA – 31) paid a visit this past Tuesday, December 16, to the Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood where he spent an hour reading two holiday books to 25 children. The kids were both thrilled and engaged as the congressman read the two holiday classics, Rudolph, The Red Nose Reindeer and The Bear Santa Claus Forgot.
Prior to the reading, Rep. Becerra presented the Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood with a $30,000 check – funds that were allocated to the organization through a federal grant administered by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and which Rep. Becerra fought to secure. The federal grant was complimented by a generous $15,000 donation from the Univision Corporation. Georgia Carrera, Director of Community Affairs at Univision Radio, was on hand to present the check at the morning ceremony.
“At a time when two working parent families and single parent families are more the rule rather than the exception, it is critical that we have worthy organizations like the Boys and Girls Club administering services and programs to young people in an effort to both foster educational development and provide a safe place for kids to go to after school,” Rep. Becerra said. “I wholeheartedly appreciate and applaud Executive Director Christine Brazil and the entire staff at the Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood for their tireless commitment to a worthy cause.”
Boys and Girls Clubs of America comprises a national network of more than 3,300 neighborhood-based facilities annually serving more than 3.6 million young people, primarily from disadvantaged circumstances. The Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood boasts 1,800 members.
