Congressman Becerra's Legislation in Focus

Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of the American Latino Community Act.
Signed into law in 2008, this legislation will create an expert commission to study whether and how to establish a national museum dedicated to Latino history and culture.

Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Latin Americans of Japanese Descent Act.
This legislation would create a commission to review and determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the relocation, internment, and deportation of Japanese Latin Americans during World War II, and subsequently recommend appropriate remedies.

The Genomic Research and Accessibility Act

Twenty percent of the human genome has been patented. To put it another way, 20 percent of your body is owned by somebody else. This legislation would put an immediate halt to the practice of gene patenting.

Librarian Incentive to Boost Recruitment and Retention in Areas of Need (LIBRARIAN) Act
This legislation addresses our nation's looming librarian shortage by encouraging prospective students to enter librarian masters programs by providing student loan forgiveness.

National Crime Gun Identification Act
Nearly forty percent of all homicides nationwide go unsolved each year. This legislation would give investigators of gun crimes an important new tool to pursue and prosecute criminals by requiring the use of microstamped identifiers on all semiautomatic pistols after 2009.

Taxpayer Bill of Rights Act
Tax season can be a daunting time for working families who are unfamiliar with our nation’s complicated tax code. This simple, comprehensive legislation would equip the American taxpayer with easy access to the knowledge and resources they need to successfully weather tax season and secure the refund they deserve.
