Each of these outstanding community based organizations will be receiving federal funds for youth-oriented projects as a result of Congressman Becerra’s efforts in Congress. Here are descriptions of the programming these dollars will pay for:
Anahuak Youth Sports Association
The Anahuak Youth Sports Association (AYSA) involves at-risk youth in structured soccer league activities including a three-pronged program of athletic practice and matches, academic support, and healthy lifestyle promotion. Designed to keep kids off the streets, engage in exercise, and to value teamwork, Anahuak holds a successful 11-year track record in helping youth turn their lives around and become positive role models for their peers. These funds will make it possible for AYSA to continue its mission of keeping kids off the streets and providing them with mentored year-round soccer.

Bresee offers computer training to low-income residents and at-risk youth. Its computer lab programs offer how-to skills in art and multimedia productions, employment-related training, and a cyber café. Federal funds will be used to purchase new computer equipment and offer job-related technology training to at-risk youth.

Participants gain vocational skills, environmental education, and a greater sense of belonging and contributing to their communities. These funds will be used to expand its existing successful program further to include more participants and communities currently not reached by its efforts.

Exodus Urban Academy
Exodus Urban Academy, a program of the All Peoples Christian Center, preventively intervenes with gang-involved youth and helps move them to healthier and nonviolent lifestyles. Their program provides core services to facilitate self-development, educational advancements, and employment placement. Funds were needed to allow the Academy to accept more referrals from organizations, such as parole officers and probation schools, and increase the number of youth they can serve.

Ramona Hall Community Center
Ramona Hall offers music classes to local youth as a way to engage them in positive after school activities. The music classes have become popular for local youth and there is a long waiting list for youth eager to participate in this after school music program. The success of this music program has been acknowledged recently by local papers. Federal funds will be used to expand classes and eliminate the waiting list, as well as to purchase up-to-date music instruments.

South Los Angeles Beautification Team
The South Los Angeles Beautification Team, part of the Coalition for Responsible Community Development, focuses on involving troubled teens as interns in graffiti removal and clean-up projects in vacant lots, alleys, and neighborhood pedestrian traffic areas. The program successfully decreases criminal activity associated with vandalism and gang graffiti and enhances safety and removal of blight near targeted areas such as schools, parks, libraries and recreation centers. Funds will be used to purchase equipment such as a commercial truck so that the program can expand its youth participation and increase its capacity by handling larger bulk trash items.
